The Old Church Cottage

Devonport was first settled by Europeans about 1840 but Maori had pa (fortified villages) here from the fourteenth century. The old volcanic cone of Mount Victoria has stunning views of the City and Gulf islands and there are old tunnel fortifications to be explored underneath its twin, North Head. Below North Head, Cheltenham Beach is a safe swimming haven surrounded by sleepy streets and quaint Victorian dwellings shaded by old trees. The main village is a lively contrast with many galleries and charming shops selling clothes, jewellery and memorabilia. Book lovers will find one of Auckland's most attractive second hand book stores in Victoria Road and bistros and cafes spill out cheerfully onto the pavements. Chocolate lovers will adore an indulgent interlude in Devonport Chocolates, a boutique chocolatier, a few steps from the ferry terminal.
